The verdict

This is a kit I respect more than I fully trust.

The shape is unlike anything else on my shelf, all those layered gold vents and the Blitz-arm shield stacked onto a Red Frame chassis, and the RG line's inner-frame engineering carries it through some very fiddly assembly. What holds it back from a higher score is exactly what other Gold Frame Amatsu builders warn about: the ankles and waist do not always want to hold the weight of that backpack once it is fully deployed.

Best for: RG collectors who already love the Astray line and want the black-and-gold Amatsu variant, not first-time RG builders

The full review

What it is

This kit reuses the RG Gundam Astray Gold Frame Amatsu Mina engineering and dresses it in the darker, less two-toned colorway of the original Amatsu that Rondo Gina Sahaku piloted before his sister Mina rebuilt it. Underneath the armor is the RG Astray inner frame lineage, so the shoulders, hips, and double-jointed knees and elbows move the way RG builders expect. Snapping the Trikeros Kai shield system together and watching the Tsumuhanotachi claws articulate independently was the moment this kit won me over. It is dense, detailed, and looks like nothing else in the Gundam SEED catalog once it is standing on a shelf.

The catch

The head assembly uses genuinely tiny parts, I nearly lost the face mask piece clipping it into place, so work over a tray. More seriously, several builders report the ankle joints struggling to keep the suit upright once the backpack wings are extended, to the point that a display stand or a wall becomes a real requirement rather than a nice-to-have. The design is also visually loud: two shades of gold plastic plus glossy black can read as cluttered from some angles, and you have to look for the Astray frame under all the extra armor plating.

Who it's for

Buy this if you already have an RG or two under your belt and specifically want the Gold Frame Amatsu's black-and-gold look on your shelf, or if you collect the Astray manga suits and want this variant alongside Red Frame and Amatsu Mina. Skip it if you want your first RG to be a confidence builder, the tiny head parts and stability quirks are not beginner-friendly. If pose stability matters more to you than screen accuracy to this specific variant, I would point a first-timer toward RG Red Frame or the standard Freedom before this one.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Gate placement follows typical RG practice, mostly on visible edges of the gold armor panels, so plan on cleanup time if you want a clean finish. The frame goes together the way most RG Astray kits do, tight tolerances that reward patience, and the head is the one section where I slowed way down because the mono-eye sensor piece and face mask are small enough to launch across the room if you're not careful.

The standout engineering is the Trikeros Kai, the reclaimed Blitz Gundam arm turned offensive shield, it swaps between beam rifle, beam saber, and three lancer dart penetrators without feeling like a gimmick. Color separation on the armor is handled almost entirely through molded plastic rather than stickers, which is the right call for a kit this visually busy. Where it loses points is backpack support, the wings are heavy and the ankle joints were not built with that much leverage in mind.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The Gold Frame Amatsu is the result of Morgenroete repairing and upgrading the original MBF-P01 Gundam Astray Gold Frame after it was heavily damaged in battle by the Astray Red Frame.
  • 02Its Trikeros Kai shield incorporates the severed right arm of the destroyed GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, which also gave Morgenroete access to Mirage Colloid stealth technology.
  • 03The suit was originally piloted by Rondo Gina Sahaku before his twin sister Rondo Mina Sahaku recovered and further upgraded it into the Re2AMATU Amatsu Mina after his death.
