This is the standard RG Unicorn's excellent engineering wearing a limited-run coat, and I think that's exactly what it should be.
The frame, the transformation gimmick, and the articulation are all unchanged from the 2014 original, which is to say they're still some of the best RG engineering Bandai has put out. What you're actually paying the Gundam Base premium for is the cosmetic tie-in, an expanded marking sheet and alternate parts meant to echo the full-size statue, and that's a fair trade if the statue connection means something to you.
Best for: RG Unicorn fans and statue-tourism collectors who want the definitive small-scale Unicorn dressed to match the real-world landmark
What it is
This is the RG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam wearing its Gundam Base exclusive coat, built around the same psycho frame engineering that made the 2014 original a benchmark kit. Clear pink frame parts show through gaps in the white armor when you pose it in Destroy Mode, and the transformation itself is the best version of that Unicorn gimmick across any scale I've built, a real hinge-and-latch mechanism rather than a part swap. The Ver.TWC pass adds open-hand parts, alternate backpack thrusters, and a bigger marking sheet built to mirror the life-sized Unicorn statue's paint scheme. Snapping the horn forward the first time and watching the frame color bloom through the shoulders is still the moment that sells this kit.
The catch
You're building the identical frame and armor as the standard 2017-era RG release, so if you already own the base RX-0 Unicorn there's nothing mechanically new here, just cosmetic parts and stickers themed around the statue. Being a Gundam Base limited item, it commands a real collector markup over the standard release and isn't sitting on shelves the way the vanilla kit is. RG scale also means small parts and thin polycaps, the beam magnum and hyper bazooka both show visible seamlines that need real cleanup work, and like most RG kits the ankles and waist loosen a bit after repeated transformation cycles.
Who it's for
Buy this if you already love the RG Unicorn's build and want the statue-tie-in version for the display value, or if you're specifically chasing the exclusive marking sheet and alternate parts as a collector piece. Skip it if you just want the best RG Unicorn experience for the least money, the standard release gives you the identical frame, articulation, and transformation gimmick without paying the limited-run premium. It's also not the easiest first RG, the small scale and fiddly hand and horn parts reward someone who's already built a kit or two.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself is straightforward RG-caliber assembly, small polycap joints, plenty of nubs to clean on the white armor panels, and a frame that goes together in logical stages before the outer shell snaps over it. Fit is tight in the good way through most of the torso and legs, though the weapon parts are where the mold seams show up and where I'd slow down with a hobby knife rather than trust the runners straight off the sprue.
What sold me on the engineering is the shoulder joint pulling forward off the torso and the hip frame sliding down a track under the skirt armor, both of which open up poses most RG kits simply can't hit. Color separation is genuinely excellent for the scale thanks to the pre-colored inner frame runners, so very little relies on the sticker sheet for anything structural. The Ver.TWC-specific extras, open hand parts, alternate thruster covers, and the statue-matched marking sheet, are a nice bonus loadout on top of an already strong accessory set.
Lore & trivia
- 01Ver.TWC stands for The World Convention, the branding Bandai used for Gundam Base exclusive releases tied to Gundam Base storefronts.
- 02The Ver.TWC treatment was also applied to the Mega Size 1/48 and MGEX 1/100 Unicorn kits, both built to echo the same life-sized Unicorn Gundam statue color scheme.
- 03The RG Unicorn Gundam frame this kit is built on introduced Bandai's Advanced MS Joint system to the RG line, engineered specifically to survive the suit's Unicorn-to-Destroy Mode transformation without breaking down.
