This kit gives you a lot of G-Self for a small footprint, but it's carrying an older frame that shows its age.
The Perfect Pack armor and binders look great once assembled and the transformation gimmick genuinely works, but the base body underneath is the same dated joint set from earlier G-Self releases. I like what this kit is trying to do more than I love actually building it.
Best for: Reconguista in G fans who want the full Perfect Pack silhouette and don't mind babysitting a sticker sheet
What it is
The G-Self is Bellri Zenam's one-of-a-kind prototype from Reconguista in G, built around a full-body Photon Frame using the ancient Rose of Hermes blueprints, and this HG dresses it in the Perfect Pack, its biggest and most kitted-out loadout. The shoulder armor and side binders are new tooling over the existing G-Self body, and they change the silhouette a lot, bulking out the shoulders and giving the suit a proper heavyweight profile. The binders fold down into an assault mode with a reflector effect part, and once I had it locked into place the transformation felt satisfying rather than gimmicky. For a compact HG, it reads as a serious, layered mobile suit on the shelf.
The catch
The core problem is that this kit reuses the same joints as older G-Self releases, so the elbows barely bend and the hips only rotate a little, which is a real limitation next to modern HG engineering. It also leans hard on stickers, over 50 of them by most counts, covering everything from color separation on the main body to the plastic eye stickers, so cleanup and careful placement eat a big chunk of build time. Builders have also flagged looseness at the torso and the shield grip once the kit's been handled a bit, so don't expect rock-solid joints out of the box.
Who it's for
Grab this one if you're building out a Reconguista in G shelf and want the definitive Perfect Pack look, or if you enjoy fiddly, sticker-heavy builds and don't mind trading some articulation for silhouette. If you want a kit that poses aggressively straight out of the box with tight modern joints, this isn't it, the arm articulation especially will disappoint anyone coming from a newer HG line. Patient builders who treat the stickers as part of the process rather than a chore will get the most out of it.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Most of the main body is shared with prior G-Self kits, so if you've built one before the core assembly will feel familiar. The new parts are concentrated in the shoulder armor and side binders, and those go together cleanly, but budget real time for the sticker sheet since it covers everything from small color-correction panels to the three-dimensional eye stickers.
The standout engineering here is the binder transformation into assault mode, which uses an articulated arm unit strong enough to hold the heavy binders in a posed reflector stance without drooping. That's a genuine payoff for a small kit. The accessory loadout (beam sabers, a new flat open hand, the reflector effect part) is generous for the price band, even if the underlying frame's articulation can't fully take advantage of it.
Lore & trivia
- 01The G-Self is built around a full-body Photon Frame using the ancient Rose of Hermes blueprints, making it structurally unlike most other mobile suits in the Regild Century setting.
- 02Only three people in the story, including protagonist Bellri Zenam, are shown able to pilot the G-Self.
- 03Reconguista in G is set a millennium after the Universal Century, created by original Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino as his first major Gundam project since the Zeta Gundam: A New Translation films.
