RG

Real Grade

Grade line · typically 1/144 · 2010 to 2026

Museum detail at 1/144. Inner frames, decals, and full color separation packed into a small footprint. Fiddly but stunning.

Real Grade is Bandai showing off. It takes the 1/144 footprint of a High Grade and packs in a pre-assembled inner frame, near-complete color separation, and a sheet of realistic decals, so a finished RG can hold its own next to kits twice its size. When people say a small Gunpla looks like a real machine, they are usually holding an RG.

All that detail comes at a cost, and the cost is patience. The parts are tiny, some of the frame pieces feel delicate the first time you flex a limb, and the runners are dense. I would not hand an RG to someone building their very first kit. Give it to someone on their third or fourth, and it becomes the moment the hobby clicks.

The line has had a real second wind lately, with fresh tooling and updated engineering on the marquee suits, so the fragility complaints that dogged the early releases are much less of an issue on the newer kits. If you want maximum detail without committing to paint or a big shelf, RG is the sweet spot.
