Best HG Gunpla Kits Worth Building Right Now

High Grade is where most of us started, and it is still the grade I reach for when I want a satisfying weekend build without a second mortgage. The line has gotten so good that the old "HG is the cheap grade" reputation barely applies anymore, the snap-fit engineering and panel lines on a modern HG can genuinely rival a Master Grade from a decade ago.

Our review coverage of HG kits is still small, so this list leads with the three we have actually built and scored ourselves, then rounds out with catalog picks that have earned their reputation across the wider builder community. I am ranking on build quality, articulation, and whether the plastic actually looks good with zero paint, not on hype.

If you want the full spread of every High Grade kit we track, the HG grade hub has the complete list with specs and prices.

  1. MS-06S Char's Zaku II1

    1. MS-06S Char's Zaku II

This is the highest-rated HG we have reviewed and it earns it. The 1/144 scale kit nails the silhouette, the shoulder spikes and monoeye are crisp straight off the runners, and the red color separation is close enough that you can skip painting entirely. Poseability is good for the price point, though the skirt armor can restrict deep leg poses. If you only buy one Zaku this year, make it this one.

  2. RX-160 Byarlant2

    2. RX-160 Byarlant

A late-UC design that does not get nearly enough love, and our review of this 1/144 kit backs that up. The frame under the armor gives it real range of motion for a suit this bulky, and the head crest and shoulder vents hold detail without a single panel line pen. My only real complaint is the beam rifle grip, which is a touch loose out of the box. Still a strong pick if you want a kit that stands out on a shelf full of RX-78 clones.

  3. AGX-04 Gerbera Tetra (Roll Out Ver.)3

    3. AGX-04 Gerbera Tetra (Roll Out Ver.)

The lowest rated of our three HG reviews, and it is a case of a great design held back by a couple of build quirks. The 1/144 kit's angular armor and roll-out color scheme look distinct next to the usual federation and Zeon palette, but the ankle joints feel a little underbuilt for the amount of weight the legs carry. Worth it for Crossbone Gundam fans, but go in expecting to nurse the joints a bit over time.

  4. 4

    4. RGM-79SP GM Sniper II

Builders keep coming back to this one for a reason. The 0080 War in the Pocket recolor of the classic GM gives you a genuinely posable kit, the ankle joint rotates a full 360 degrees for crouching shots that most 1/144 kits cannot pull off. The plastic runs on the thin side and the wrist joint can feel loose once the sniper rifle is attached, so build with a light touch. Grab some waterslide decals if you can, the kit leans on them to sell the paint job.

  5. 5

    5. RX-78-2 Gundam (Revive Ver.)

The kit that reset what an HG could be when Bandai revised it, and it still holds up. Snap-fit color separation on the head, chest vents, and V-fin means barely any painting is required to get a display-ready result, and the internal frame gives it more range of motion than the original suit design has any right to have. It is a common entry point for a reason, and there is nothing wrong with a common entry point when it is this well engineered.

  6. 6

    6. MS-05B Zaku I

A quieter release that Zeon fans rate highly for its simplicity done right. The rounded early-war silhouette is less flashy than the Zaku II line, but the parts fit is tight, the monoeye sits flush, and the machine gun grip actually holds a pose. If you are building a One Year War lineup and want something that is not another Zaku II variant, this fills the gap well and takes an afternoon, not a weekend.

  7. 7

    7. RX-77-2 Guncannon

The artillery unit of the original trio does not get chosen as often as the Gundam or GM, which is a shame because the twin shoulder cannons and chunky proportions build into something with real presence on a shelf. The cannons swivel independently and the hip joint gives enough range for a proper firing stance. Parts count is low and the fit is forgiving, making it a solid pick if you want a second HG build without a steep learning curve.

  8. 8

    8. MS-09 Dom

The skirt armor and heat saber on this kit make it one of the more visually interesting Zeon suits to build in HG, and the hover skirt panels have enough individual movement to fake a floating pose on a display stand. The torso is a bit boxy and the arms do not swing quite as far as I would like, but the overall stance and color separation more than make up for it. A great pick once you have the basics down and want something with more personality than a standard grunt suit.

The short version

The Char's Zaku II is the best HG we have reviewed so far, but the GM Sniper II and RX-78-2 Revive earn their spots on this list from wide community consensus alone.
