A commemorative Freedom that builds like an HG wearing an FM badge, and mostly earns it.

This is a genuinely fun weekend build, but I want to be clear about what it actually is before you buy it expecting an inner-frame showpiece.
Ver.GCP started life as a tie-in to the full-scale Freedom statue in Shanghai (GCP stands for Gundam China Project), and the kit itself plays it straighter than the FM name suggests, closer to a beefed-up High Grade than a true Master Grade rival. Where it wins is the wing gimmick and the sheer amount of Freedom-specific posing it lets you pull off without a struggle. I came away happy I built it, just not blown away by the engineering underneath.
Best for: Gundam SEED fans who want a display-friendly Freedom with the HiMAT wing pose and don't mind leaning on stickers for the color work
What it is
The Ver.GCP is the first kit in Bandai's Full Mechanics 1/100 line, and it's built around recreating the Freedom the way it appeared as a giant statue at the Gundam Base in Shanghai. Snapping it together feels like a High Grade that got a few extra sprues and a nicer finish, with mechanical detailing and panel lines worked into the limbs and torso. The best part of the build for me was the wing unit. Once assembled it folds and fans out convincingly for the HiMAT flight mode, and fiddling with that mechanism after the rest of the kit is done is genuinely satisfying. It also ships with a plain grey display base plate and a pair of standing support struts that clip onto the plasma cannon muzzles, which do a better job than I expected at keeping the finished pose steady.
The catch
Color separation leans hard on a large sheet of color-correcting stickers rather than molded plastic, so if you're allergic to sticker work on a kit above HG price and complexity, this one will annoy you. Structurally it really is closer to an HG with extra assembly steps than a true Master Grade rival, some builders have flagged it as basically an RE100 kit wearing an FM label, complete with polycaps in the joints that can be a little fussy to seat correctly during the build. It also doesn't include an action base, just the grey plate and the muzzle struts, so if you want a proper posing stand you're buying one separately. None of this ruins the kit, but it does mean the price point buys you presentation more than it buys you frame engineering.
Who it's for
If you're a Gundam SEED fan who wants a Freedom on the shelf with real HiMAT wing presence and you're fine relying on stickers for a chunk of the color work, this is worth picking up, especially if you can find it at Gundam Base or resale pricing rather than paying import-collector markup. If you're chasing genuine Master Grade engineering, an inner frame, or expect the FM badge to mean advanced part fit and a big part count, look at a proper MG Freedom instead, this kit will feel thinner than the name implies. Newer builders who don't mind stickers will have a smooth, enjoyable build either way.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Assembly moves at HG pace with a bit more polish. The polycaps in the major joints need care when seating them or they sit slightly off, and the panel line detailing throughout the limbs and torso pays off once the color-correcting stickers are applied, since the sheet is doing a lot of the visual heavy lifting on this one.
The hip joint axis can slide down to open up clearance for leg articulation, which is a nice small touch for posing. Combined with the double-jointed elbows and knees, most of the classic Freedom poses come together without a fight, though the full 'fire everything' cannon stance takes some patient adjustment to nail. The wing gimmick and the muzzle struts for standing mode are the standout engineering touches on an otherwise straightforward kit.
