This is the HG that proves grade doesn't decide quality, sculpting and engineering do.
I went in expecting a filler variant with a paint job and came out with one of the best-posing Zakus I own at any scale. The crest-head sculpt sells the Kycilia's Forces identity instantly, and the frame underneath does things I don't expect from a sub-$25 kit.
Best for: Beginners who want a real hobby kit and Zaku collectors who want the sharpest version of the MS-05 line without stepping up to MG
What it is
This is the 2017 Gundam The Origin era HG reissue of the classic MS-05 Zaku I, retooled with the head crest and unit markings for Kycilia Zabi's special forces. What struck me first was how confident the sculpt feels for something this size and price, the head vents, the barrel chest, the slightly hunched stance all read as Zaku I rather than a reskinned Zaku II. Snapping it together took an evening with nippers and a hobby knife, nothing more, and the fit at every joint felt deliberate rather than loose. For a kit built around a mid-1980s silhouette, it feels shockingly current on the shelf.
The catch
The plastic isn't the friendliest to nub placement, and I found myself doing more cleanup on visible gate marks than I expected, mostly around the feet and lower legs where they're hardest to hide. Seamlines on the round parts (helmet, shoulders) need attention if you want a fully clean build, this kit does not disguise mold lines the way some newer HGs do. The mono-eye is a sticker-and-switch setup rather than a trapped-clear-part gimmick, which works fine but isn't going to wow anyone used to fancier eye mechanisms. Weapon loadout is also modest: machine gun, heat hawk, bazooka, shield, no surprises beyond that.
Who it's for
I'd hand this to a first-time builder without hesitation, it only asks for nippers and files and rewards patience with a genuinely satisfying finished pose. It's also a smart pickup for anyone building a Zeon lineup who wants the Kycilia's Forces markings specifically, since that head crest isn't on the standard-issue Zaku I release. Skip it if you want a gimmick-heavy mono-eye or if visible seamlines are a dealbreaker for you, in that case budget for cleanup time or step up to a Master Grade instead. For everyone else chasing the best plain Zaku I on the market, this is it.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The build itself moves fast, ten runners and a short instruction booklet mean an evening is plenty even for someone new to the hobby. Fit is snug without fighting you, parts click into place with intention rather than looseness, and only nippers and a hobby knife or file are needed to get clean results. The plastic does grab onto gate marks more than I'd like, so budget extra time on the feet if you want them spotless.
Where this kit earns its reputation is the frame. Double-jointed elbows and knees, hip joints that swing forward and back, and thighs that rotate and raise horizontally add up to a Zaku that holds dynamic combat poses instead of standing at parade rest. Color separation on the vents, shoulder spikes, and crest is handled through molded plastic rather than leaning on stickers for the main color blocks, so the finished look holds up even for builders who skip painting entirely.
Lore & trivia
- 01The head crest on this variant is modeled after the steel helmets worn by the cavalry of the Principality of Zeon's state security police, marking it as Major General Kycilia Zabi's personal special forces unit.
- 02In the Gundam The Origin timeline, Kycilia's assault forces piloted these Zaku I units during the occupation of Granada, part of the opening moves of the One Year War.
- 03This release reuses and retools the acclaimed 2015 era Gundam The Origin HG Zaku I frame, which is widely credited with outshining the older 1/100 Master Grade Zaku I in both articulation and detail.
