This is a bundle worth chasing if you already like the Core Gundam concept, and a rough sell if you don't.
You get three near-identical 1/144 base bodies recolored in a flat low visibility scheme with clear orange effect parts, which means the value here is in owning the whole core-change cast rather than in any single suit standing out. I like it because it turns three separate small builds into one satisfying afternoon and gives you a matched trio for a display shelf. It is not going to wow anyone who wants a single show-stopping centerpiece kit.
Best for: Build Divers fans and core-gimmick collectors who want the full matched trio in a stealth colorway, not first-time builders looking for one striking centerpiece
What it is
This set gives you three versions of the same core-body Gunpla, the original Core Gundam piloted by Hiroto Kuga, its upgrade Core Gundam II, and the AI-built Alus Core Gundam, all molded in a flat low visibility gray-on-gray scheme with clear orange sensor and effect parts instead of the usual bright primary colors. Each one is a small, simple 1/144 High Grade on its own, so building all three back to back is fast and honestly kind of meditative. I liked seeing the family resemblance across three suits side by side. It is a Gundam Base exclusive, so the actual selling point is completing a themed collection, not any individual kit's complexity.
The catch
Nub placement on these small core frames is a known weak point across the whole HGBD Core Gundam line, several nubs sit right on visible armor edges rather than tucked inside joints, so cleanup takes more care than the tiny part count suggests. The sticker sheet is thin, mostly foil for eyes and sensors, with no color correcting stickers, which is fine here since the low visibility palette is muted anyway but means there is little room to fix seams with decals. Because all three suits share the same base frame, if you already own a standard-color Core Gundam this set adds recolors rather than new engineering, and being Gundam Base exclusive it can be harder to find and pricier secondhand than a normal HG release.
Who it's for
Grab this if you are into the Build Divers core-change concept and want the full three-suit family in a cohesive low visibility scheme for a display run, or if you like small quick builds and want three in one box. Skip it if you are new to Gunpla and want one impressive kit to show off, the core bodies are simple and the muted colorway will read as plain to anyone not already invested in the source material. It also is not the pick if you want armor sets included, this is base bodies only, so budget separately for the accessory kits if you want the full transforming experience these suits are known for.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
Each of the three core bodies goes together fast, this is a tiny suit compared to most High Grades and the small part count keeps the whole build low stress. The tradeoff is nub placement, several connection points sit right on visible armor faces instead of tucked away in joints, so it pays to go slow with the nippers and clean up with a hobby knife rather than rushing three builds in one sitting.
The poseability is the real selling point of this frame, double-jointed arms, a ball-jointed head, and legs that swivel from a peg and polycap hip give these little suits nearly the same range as their fully armored forms. The low visibility colorway is molded in, not painted, so the flat gray tones hold up fine without stickers doing the color separation work, and the clear orange effect parts add a nice pop against the muted palette.
Lore & trivia
- 01The PFF-X7 Core Gundam is the personal Gunpla of Hiroto Kuga, the protagonist of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE, and is based visually on the original RX-78-2 Gundam.
- 02The core-change gimmick lets these base bodies swap into different armor sets, aquatic, flying, ranged, and more, giving the line more mix-and-match customization than earlier Gundam kit lines attempted.
- 03The AGP-X1 Alus Core Gundam is a more powerful replica built by the AI entity Alus after it reawakened and mistook the story's Build Divers for invaders, using the same core-change system as Hiroto's original suit.
- 04This Low Visibility Ver. three-kit set was a Gundam Base and Satellite Gundam Base exclusive release in May 2021.
