The verdict

I like this kit a lot more than its size suggests I should.

The Core Gundam alone is a cute, unassuming little RX-78 tribute in the G-3 scheme, but snap the Veetwo armor on and it becomes a completely different silhouette, wide-shouldered, gun-heavy, and genuinely imposing on a shelf full of bigger kits. The PLANETS docking gimmick is the reason to own this over a plain Core Gundam, and it works better than I expected from a budget-tier HG.

Best for: Build Divers fans and gimmick lovers who want a transforming, two-mode display piece without paying MG money

The full review

What it is

This is the Core Gundam in its G-3 color scheme, the callback to Hiroto's original GBN login avatar before it got wrecked, paired with the Veetwo armor pack that turns it into a heavy support gunner. Building it, the appeal clicked for me almost immediately: strip the armor off and you get a lean, minimalist mobile suit that already looks complete on its own, then click the Venus Armor pieces onto the PLANETS System backpack and shoulders and the whole profile changes into something bulkier and far more aggressive. Having two distinct looks out of one box, with a real transformation gimmick and not just a paint deco swap, is exactly the kind of thing that makes small HG kits worth building instead of just displaying pre-made.

The catch

This is still an entry-tier HG built to a budget, so the frame underneath is simple and the Core Gundam's own leg articulation is limited once it's on its own two feet, most of the interesting posing comes after the armor goes on. Small hands may find the chest vents and other tiny sub-parts fiddly to handle and clean up, and there's a color-correcting foil sticker sheet involved for accents like the eyes rather than everything being molded in color. The shield's handle is also awkward to hold in a natural grip for display shots. None of this is a dealbreaker at this price point, but go in expecting an HG, not an MG in disguise.

Who it's for

I'd point this at Build Divers fans who want the Veetwo specifically, and at anyone who enjoys kits with an actual mechanical gimmick over kits that are just well-detailed statues. It's also a solid pick for builders who want two display configurations from one purchase without stepping up to MG pricing or part count. I would not send a first-time builder here looking for a definitive RX-78 experience, the real RX-78-2 kits do that better, and I would not recommend it to anyone who only cares about maximum poseability, since the Core Gundam's own articulation is the weak link here.

The build story

What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.

Assembly moves fast. The runners use thin gate connections that clip and clean up with minimal effort, and there's no inner frame to fuss over since this is a straightforward HG snap kit. The trickiest moments are the smallest sub-parts, things like the chest vents, which take a steady hand to seat correctly. The foil sticker sheet covers the eyes and a handful of small accent details rather than needing paint, which keeps the whole build approachable for anyone newer to the hobby.

The standout engineering is the PLANETS System itself, the docking interface that lets the Venus Armor clip onto the Core Gundam's back and shoulders and actually stay put instead of sagging or popping loose, which is not a given on gimmick kits at this price. Once armored up, the Veetwo's weapon loadout steps up too, the beam sabers and spray gun that work fine on the bare Core Gundam give way to a larger beam rifle and an enlarged shield that interlock with the armor, so the accessory set genuinely feels like an upgrade rather than reused parts in a bigger shell.

Lore & trivia

  • 01The G-3 color scheme on this Core Gundam recreates the original colors of Hiroto Kuga's GBN avatar from before it suffered the engine failure that kicks off his arc in Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE.
  • 02The Veetwo Gundam is the heavy weapons configuration of the Core Gundam, created by docking it with the Venus Armor, and is built and piloted by Hiroto Kuga.
  • 03In its on-screen debut in Episode 5 of Re:RISE, the Veetwo Gundam does not get much of a standout showing despite the upgrade in firepower it represents.
  • 04The kit uses Bandai's PLANETS System, a docking interface built specifically so the same Core Gundam base can swap between multiple armor packs across the HGBD:R line.
