This is a genuinely fun HG that leans hard into gimmicks instead of a plain gun-and-sword loadout, and it mostly pulls it off.
The self-propelled saw shield, the opening chest gatling, and the shoulder-slide shrug pose are the kind of details that make a 1/144 feel worth the shelf space. I'd call it one of the better P-Bandai SEED Freedom exclusives, held back only by cleanup demands that are steeper than a typical HG.
Best for: SEED Freedom fans and HG builders who want a gimmick-forward kit and don't mind extra seam work for a distinctive silhouette
What it is
The Hilda Harken colorway of the Gyan Strom is a P-Bandai exclusive HG built on the same tooling as the standard release and the Agnes Giebenrath version, just recolored into Hilda's darker scheme. It's a spiritual successor to the Gouf Ignited with a UC-era Gyan silhouette grafted on, and Bandai leaned into that with real gimmicks rather than a static pose-and-display kit. The chest armor splits open to reveal a pair of rotary beam gatlings, the backpack wings swing forward so the missile launcher can fire from the shoulder, and the signature circular shield has beam saber emitters around its rim for a spinning saw-blade effect. Building it feels like assembling a suit that was actually designed with play patterns in mind, not just a display trophy.
The catch
The plastic quality is good and molded in bright, accurate colors so sticker reliance is low, but that same brightness makes gate marks and parting lines stand out fast, especially across the head and shoulder armor where builders report a real cleanup job if you want a clean finish. Because this is the Hilda Harken P-Bandai exclusive rather than the general retail release, it's harder to find and usually costs more than a standard HG once import and reseller markup are factored in. The shoulder-slide mechanism that extends arm range is also a little loose out of the runners for some builders, so don't expect rock-solid tension on that joint from the first pose.
Who it's for
Buy this if you're into SEED Freedom and want the more unusual Compass-pilot colorway rather than the standard release, or if you just want an HG that rewards patient nub cleanup with a genuinely satisfying gimmick set. Skip it if you want a no-fuss weekend build. The seam lines on the head and shoulders need real attention with a hobby knife and sanding stick if you care about a clean finish, and the P-Bandai exclusivity means you're paying a premium over a suit that, mechanically, is identical to the cheaper general release. If you just want the Gyan Strom shape and don't care about Hilda's specific paint job, the standard retail colorway gets you the same build for less money.
The build story
What the build is actually like, and the engineering worth knowing about.
The plastic itself is good quality and nubs clip and sand down cleanly, which helps because the bright molded colors on this kit show every gate mark and parting line if you don't stay on top of them, particularly on the head and the shoulder armor plates. Nothing here is fiddly in a bad way, it's just a kit that rewards a bit more patience at the cutting mat than most HGs.
The engineering standouts are the gimmicks: double-jointed elbows and knees plus a ball-and-socket monoeye give real pose range for a 1/144, the shoulder armor's sliding connection extends arm reach beyond the usual HG ceiling, and the self-propelled shield with beam saber emitters around its edge is the kind of accessory that makes this suit's identity land on the shelf. Weapon loadout covers a beam rifle, beam axe, and the shield, giving a decent spread of poses for the HG price point even before accounting for the exclusive colorway premium.
Lore & trivia
- 01The GYAN Strom was developed as a spiritual successor to the ZGMF-2000 GOUF Ignited and is operated by the mercenary group Compass in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
- 02Its design and name are a direct homage to the original YMS-15 Gyan from the first Mobile Suit Gundam series, with 'Strom' being the German word for a large current or river.
- 03At least two Compass pilots, Agnes Giebenrath and Hilda Harken, pilot their own Gyan Strom units in the film, each getting a distinct P-Bandai exclusive colorway kit.
- 04The shield's rim-mounted beam saber emitters let it spin and function as a saw blade in combat, a gimmick Bandai carried directly into the kit's articulation.
